Post 3a and 3b   Leave a comment

I am indebited to Danny Nicholson (@dannynic) for this week’s resources.  My daytime position is as an Assistant Headteacher in a school in Sheffield with responsibility for managing our MLE and encouraging the use of ICT in the classroom.  In a month’s time we are taking possession of our new building.  This state of the art(science?) school building comes with 500 series Promethean Whiteboards in every classroom. In my new science department I was given the freedom to design the labs.  I took the decision to move the whiteboards from behind the teacher’s demonstration desk.  This means that for the first time in our school students will be able to access the boards easily and now that these new boards enable multiple touches they will be able to truly interact with the resources.  So to celebrate this here are two resources.

The first is a nice web-site and animation that allows students to practice their pair bonding in DNA.  It also has a wealth of information that should suffice right up to the UK A-levels in biology. Elsewhere on the site there is protein translation, animations on genes, fireflies and prions.  This is a great website to use as a plenary and then give the address out to let students learn further at home.

The second is definitely one for the students to play.  Mixing light allows you to draw strokes of coloured light which when mixed  produces the correct colours.  Those of you who have tried to demo this one in class  with coloured filters will know how difficult this can be.” Yes that really is white, in the middle…honest.”  Both these resources allow students to interact with the software, to communicate with each other while they do it and hopefully gain a deeper understanding of science along the way

Three weeks in and three resources.
